The Best Retro Video Game Controllers in 2023

Hey, so you're into retro games too? Awesome! I'm gonna share a quick rundown of why I'm a sucker for retro video games and chat about some of my favorite retro emulation controllers.

I'm a big fan of video games, but I've always been a bit behind the times because I couldn't keep up with the latest games and consoles. My gaming journey started with the 1982 ColecoVision, then the 1983 Classic 8-bit Nintendo, followed by the Game Boy and the Super Nintendo in its later life.

It took me ages, but eventually, I caught up with the PS4, although I never splurged on expensive AAA games. Since I didn't own a modern console for the longest time, I stuck to emulating those now retro games. I went through a bunch of third-party controllers for my PC, just trying to get that nostalgic feel from my first consoles.

Long story short, I'm head over heels for retro video games because they were my main gaming fix for the longest time, and also there were arcades all around the place. Now that I have access to newer games, I find myself not as excited about diving into the complexity and length of current-gen titles.

Don't get me wrong; I can appreciate how awesome they are, but the more straightforward fun of retro games is for me. Not keen on spending hours on one mission or a boss fight – I'm not getting any younger for that kind of time commitment, and sometimes there is no time/energy for lengthy current titles. In other words, I'm satisfied with a 20-30 min gaming fix, which happens once or twice a week sometimes.

If you’re on the hunt for a new gaming controller, I would recommend considering the following key features:

  1. Compatibility:

Ensure that the controller is compatible with your gaming platform, specifically for PC gaming. Most controllers are compatible with Windows, but it's always good to check for compatibility with your specific operating system. Most newer controllers are compatible with most current-gen consoles and PCs.

  2. Connectivity:

It's crucial to consider connectivity options. USB is a prevalent connection for gaming controllers, while some controllers utilize Bluetooth. Ensure your PC has the requisite ports like USB-C or built-in Bluetooth capability. Wired controllers typically boast lower latency, making them preferable for competitive gamers. On the other hand, Wireless controllers offer increased freedom of movement and a cleaner setup, making them a popular choice for non-competitive gamers. Some controllers even provide the flexibility to seamlessly switch between wired and wireless modes

  3. Build Quality:

Consider the build quality of the controller. Look for a controller that feels comfortable in your hands and is durable enough to withstand long gaming sessions. Pay attention to the materials used and the overall design, and to the reviews before you buy to see what other gamers have experienced with the feeling of the controllers, ie: if it’s too light and cheap material, if the buttons sink or click, etc.

  4. Button Layout and Configuration:

Choose a controller with a button layout that suits your preferences. Some controllers have additional programmable buttons or paddles, allowing for customization to enhance your gaming experience. This is super useful for saving, loading, and other hotkey configurations for a smoother and uninterrupted experience.

  5. Ergonomics:

Ergonomics play a crucial role in comfort during extended gaming sessions. Look for a controller that feels natural in your hands and has a design that minimizes hand fatigue. In my case, I feel more comfortable with the Dualshock-like design.

  6. Analog Sticks and D-Pad:

The quality and feel of analog sticks and the D-pad are important for precise control in various games. Ensure they are responsive and provide a good level of sensitivity. And speaking of sensitivity, there are new controllers that feature the sensitivity configuration in their apps, such as the 8BitDo controllers.

  7. Trigger and Bumper Quality:

Quality triggers and bumpers are essential for games that require precise control over actions like shooting or braking. Check for controllers with responsive triggers and bumpers.

  8. Vibration Feedback:

Vibration feedback adds an immersive element to gaming. Make sure the controller has vibration motors that can enhance your gaming experience by providing tactile feedback. Newer controllers update their firmware with tons of compatibility with retro games. As an example, I recently finished Neo Contra for the PS2 and my controller has all of the game’s rumble info in its firmware and it was explosive fun!

  9. Compatibility with Games:

Some games may have specific controller requirements. Ensure the controller you choose is compatible with the games you want to play, especially if you have specific genres in mind. So think about getting a controller that works with Wii or Switch games, or even mobile games.

  10. Customization Software:

Some controllers come with customization software that allows you to tweak settings, remap buttons, and create profiles. This can be beneficial for fine-tuning the controller to your preferences.

  11. Price:

Consider your budget. Gaming controllers come in a range of prices, so find one that fits within your budget while still meeting your requirements.

By carefully considering these features, you can find a PC gaming controller to rule all of your games, one that enhances your gaming experience and suits your personal preferences.

Ok, now that I have gone through the important features to consider, I’ll share only a few of the controllers that I’ve been happier with the most:

Compatibility: Switch, Windows, SteamOS, Android, Apple, Raspberry Pi

Connectivity: Bluetooth 4.0 USB-C

Battery Life 18 hours play with 1-2 hours charging time. You will never run out of juice.

Special Features: Rumble Vibration, Motion control (Switch only), Turbo Function

Amazon Listing Price: $44.99

The 8BitDo Sn30 Pro controller is my newest and favorite controller to date, hands down. It boasts a premium build quality, providing a satisfying feel with no slipping. The d-pad and buttons neither sink nor stick, ensuring a smooth gaming experience. Each button offers a satisfactory press, and the joysticks are sturdy and durable. In terms of ergonomics, if you enjoyed the SNES controller, you'll likely appreciate this one as well, although it may take a couple of sessions to get used to the proximity of the joystick with the rest of the left side of the controller.

I really love this controller and am eager to get an upgrade to the 8BitDo Pro 2. It's the perfect blend of modern functionality and retro design. Oh btw, there are different color designs, like the one in the photo is what I got, the Game Boy style, there’s SNES, XBOX, and transparent colors :D and I love the fact that its design makes it so portable. The last game that I had a blast with, as mentioned earlier in this post, is Neo Contra for the PlayStation 2.

Please, do yourself a favor and check it out on Amazon. Go to the 8BitDo store from there to see their other delights.

Compatibility: Switch, Windows, SteamOS, Android, Apple, Raspberry Pi

Connectivity: Bluetooth 4.0 USB-C

Battery Life: 20 hours of play with 4 hours of charging time

On Amazon for $49.99 but I see it with a 15% at times.

Upgraded Features: Macross: Assign a long sequence action to one single button with the new Macross feature. Adjustable ranges for the triggers to act faster or smoother. Modify Vibration intensity to preference.

I don't own this controller yet, but I plan to get it once I've moved past the honeymoon phase with its predecessor. I've watched numerous YouTube reviews, and the consensus has been positive, with only a couple of reviewers suggesting that the upgrades might not justify the extra cost. In my opinion, the enhancements are worthwhile, especially if you have the budget to play or emulate newer games. For instance, I'm unable to run PS3-4 games on my current PC, but as a retro gamer, I don't find that limitation an issue.

However, I acknowledge that someday, when I can afford a more powerful PC, I'll likely invest in this controller to enhance my experience with closer-generation games. This recommendation applies particularly if your primary gaming device is a computer, although it's worth noting that the beauty of this controller lies in its compatibility with almost any other console. Additionally, customer reviews indicate that the redesigned handles contribute to a more ergonomic design, reducing the likelihood of it slipping from your hands.

As mentioned before, I haven’t tried this controller myself, but 8BitDo has earned my trust and I believe this is one controller to rule them all. 8BitDo has never disappointed and as a fan of their quality, I can highly recommend it.

Take a closer look at its Amazon site.

Compatibility: SEGA Genesis, SEGA Saturn, SEGA Genesis Mini, PC/Mac, PS3, and Switch

Connectivity: 2.4 GHz wireless. Includes both SEGA Genesis Port and USB Port Receivers and a 3.3ft Charging Cable

I purchased this controller for my Sega Genesis Mini, and I was impressed by the quality of its packaging and the sleek design of the controller. It pays a great tribute to the original controller, and the black shiny material gives it a sophisticated look, kinda sexy.

However, the D-pad is a bit mushy and not ideal for playing fighting games, which was my primary reason for getting it, to enjoy Street Fighter Turbo on the Sega Mini. It's not a bad experience, but the original controller feels much better.

The shoulder buttons have a slight clickiness and are a bit on the loose side, but I can't complain too much. While it lacks special features, it is compatible with PC, allowing you to emulate games, and your hands will appreciate the authenticity of the original Sega 6-button pad.

Compatibility: Samsung Gear VR, G-Box Q, PC, PS3 and most Bluetooth-compatible input devices. PC requires a cable connection (Cable is included)

Connectivity: 2.4 GHz wireless. Includes both SEGA Genesis Port and USB Port Receivers and a 3.3ft Charging Cable

Matricom’s website price: $24.90

The G-PAD XYBA is a great controller for emulating games on Fire TV Stick, Fire tablet via bluetooth. It doesn’t work via bluetooth with PC which is a boomer but it works with any micro usb cable. It doesn’t make much sense to me but it’s a great controller all in all. It’s a good quality built controller, the joysticks don’t feel cheap, the d-pad doesn’t sink. All buttons feel great and the grip as well. It’s a durable controller but the fact that you need a cable to play on PC turns me off a little bit.

Compatibility: Super Nintendo Classic Edition

Connectivity: USB/Wireless 2.4G

Amazon listing price: $24.99 in 2020

I got this one for my Super Nintendo Mini which I got as a Christmas gift (one of the best gifts ever). It feels like the original in your hand, and what makes it special is that this is the Super Famicom edition, which was the Japanese version not sold in the US back in the day.

It’s only compatible with the SNES Classic Edition (or Mini), but that’s totally fine because they belong together :)

The 8Bitdo SF30 2.4G SFC Classic Edition came in the American version as well, and it feels amazing, it’s satisfactory to just randomly press its buttons, with a beautiful and durable built.

Compatibility: Nintendo Switch Windows 10+, Android & Raspberry Pi

Connectivity: Wired USB, Bluetooth

Special Features: Turbo function (unavailable on Switch), Button swap Joystick / D-pad swap

Amazon listing price: $29.99

Another fantastic controller from 8BitDo. I purchased this one after trying the Retro-Bit 8-Button Arcade controller, and despite both being designed for the Sega Mini, they have distinct differences. The 8BitDo M30 lacks the reflective shiny black finish of the Retro-Bit; instead, it has a more jet-black appearance.

Unlike the Retro-Bit, it is not as slippery, offers a great grip, a D-pad that doesn't sink, buttons that don't feel mushy, and it connects instantly. The build quality is excellent, and it feels durable. Everything about this controller is fantastic. While it lacks PC compatibility, it is designed exclusively for the Sega Mini, and that's perfectly fine! It provides a great tribute experience to the Sega Genesis.

It’s available on Amazon for only $24.99 and it also has a white Sega Saturn Version. Check it out here!
