Start with Google Analytics or Google Tag Manager

Which one should you learn first, Google Analytics 4 or Google Tag Manager and why.

A hiker stopped on a forked path with two signs; one sign says "GA4" (google analytics 4) pointing to the left and the other sign says "GTM" (google tag manager)pointing to the right.

In my mission to build up a successful dropshipping website, I learned that it’s good practice to learn the skill of SEO, for which Google Analytics is necessary to familiarize with. What I learned halfway through the analytics course is that it’s a good idea to actually start learning Google Tag Manager before analytics.

It's been a bit frustrating, I won't lie. However, beyond that frustration, I find the realization that I'm getting closer to my goal. It's unfortunate that I didn't start learning Tag Manager, but hey, trial and error. Plus, I lack guidance since nobody I know is doing what I'm doing, which is why we're here. I've also realized that owning a website is the best way to practice SEO. Although I really want to start with my main dropshipping website, I have a gut feeling that starting with a blog will help me (and you too).

Why learn Tag Manager first? Well, because Analytics needs a piece of code to be pasted into a Tag Manager configuration in order to be able to access the website you’re trying to get its analytics from, which is when I realized it’s time to build up my own website and practice it with, instead of stalking other websites.

I was initially unsure about where to begin my Analytics learning. I watched numerous random YouTube videos until I eventually discovered these two definite resources that got me to the GA4 certification:

  • Simplilearn is a YouTube channel and it has proven to be an excellent learning resource. They offer comprehensive tutorials, some of which are available for free, and I can certainly recommend the channel.

  • Skillshop’s Google Analytics 4 Certification was the one that worked best for me and I wish I had run into it earlier. It provided clear guidance and support throughout the course, and I successfully earned the certification. It's now proudly displayed on my LinkedIn profile.

Some people may say that learning all these SEO things isn't necessary for starting a dropshipping business. However, I want to be as informed as possible in all these areas because eventually, I'll have to delegate these tasks.

I hope this helped, and please feel free to point corrections in the comments, I’m a mere learner.
